These developers have been named to receive Building With Trees Awards of Excellence by The Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of Home Builders.

A jury of development industry and urban forestry professionals selected the winning projects. Criteria considered in making the awards included: Creativity in and attention to including existing trees in the project during planning and design; care in protecting trees during construction; and attention to providing for aftercare and long-term maintenance.

The Awards of Excellence were presented at the Arbor Day Foundation's national Building With Trees Conference, March 26–28, 2001, at Arbor Day Farm's Lied Conference Center in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

A 2001 Building With Trees Award of Excellence for residential development in the 26 to 100 lots category was presented to Residential Development Group for its Kelly Woods project. Located in Crystal Lake, IL, Kelly Woods was designed with the tree expertise of Hendrickson the Care of Trees to preserve the wooded character of a 22-acre site. Judges cited the project for exemplary cooperation among the city, developer and utilities in the cause of preserving trees. Judges also noted required involvement of subcontractors in tree preservation as important to the success of the project as well as the practice of locating the driveways for each of the 51 homes on a lot-by-lot basis to minimize disturbance to existing vegetation. Shea Homes was recognized for residential development in the 501 or more lots category for its 1500-acre Silver Creek Valley Country Club community, located in the picturesque foothills outside San Jose, Calif. With the tree expertise of Barrie D. Coate of Los Gatos, Shea Homes worked to mirror and complement the existing natural features of the property by preserving mature oaks and with extensive tree planting. Judges cited the entry for its in-depth tree inventory and attention to detail including fencing trees to be saved to prevent construction equipment and materials from compacting soil in critical root zones. Taylor-Morley Homes received a Special Award for Pinehurst Place in Maryland Heights, MO Taylor-Morley enlisted the help of Richard Hall of Hall & Halsey Associates of St. Louis to provide tree expertise. Pinehurst Place with 187 single family homes and 32 attached villa homes is located on 65 acres that at the turn of the 20th century was the location of the country estates of many prominent St. Louis families. Over the years, the estates fell into disrepair and the property was used as a landfill. Redevelopment and restoration of the site included clean up of decades of debris and planting of more than 1000 trees, as well as careful preservation of trees lining a creek on the property.
