Nebraska City, Neb.--The Cenla Pride Environmental Museum and Camp, Alexandria, Louisiana, will receive a National Arbor Day Foundation 1999 Education Award at a special awards ceremony to be held here Saturday, May 1. Cenla Pride is a Keep America Beautiful affiliate in Alexandria. Education Awards recognize educational programs that are worthy models for others.
Cenla Pride, in cooperation with Kisatchie National Forest, the Alexandria Mall, and the city of Alexandria, is recognized for creating the Environmental Treasure Museum, a hands-on museum open free to the public. For the past five years, Cenla Pride has also sponsored Project TreeScope, and urban forestry day camp for at-risk teens, held at the museum. Nearly 37,000 people have visited the museum to date, and 150 young people have participated in Project TreeScope.
Representatives of Cenla Pride will attend the 27th annual National Arbor Day Foundation Awards banquet to receive the award. The ceremony is part of the Arbor Day weekend celebration held in Nebraska City from April 30-May 2.
Others being honored this year include the other 1999 Education Award winners: Andersen Middle School, Omaha, Nebraska, recognized for its environmental and educational work on its campus; and Place Middle School, Denver, Colorado, honored for creating an outdoor classroom and transforming its campus, which was built on a former landfill.
The National Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit education organization dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship.
