MISSOURI ARBOR WEEK ACTIVITY GUIDE RECEIVES NATIONAL ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION CELEBRATION AWARD
Nebraska City, Neb.--The Missouri Arbor Week Activity Guide, produced by the Missouri Department of Conservation, will receive one of three 1999 Arbor Day Celebration Awards from The National Arbor Day Foundation at a special awards ceremony to be held here on Saturday, May 1. The award honors school, community, and state programs that best represent the spirit of the tree planters' holiday.
The Missouri Arbor Week Activity Guide was developed after a year of work by teachers and foresters, and offers five days of cross-curricular activities that teach students about trees and forestry. Part of a state-wide program that reaches almost 130,000 students and teachers each year, the guide addresses science and math skills, as well as social studies, physical education, language arts, music, and art.
Representatives of the Missouri Department of Conservation will attend the 27th annual National Arbor Day Foundation Awards banquet to receive the award. The ceremony is part of the Arbor Day weekend celebration held in Nebraska City from April 30-May 2.
Others being honored this year include Jack Herschend of Branson, Missouri, winner of a 1999 Enersen Award for his leadership in reforesting areas of the Ozarks affected by development, and the First Arbor Day Celebration of the City of DeKalb, Illinois, winner of a 1999 Celebration Award.
The National Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit education organization dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship.
