Safety and property remain the priority for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. As communities move from emergency response to long-term recovery, the 3,000-tree program gives Pepco customers a chance to plant new trees and replace those that were lost or broken. The program launched October 9 and will run through November 21.

As communities affected by Hurricane Sandy transition from emergency response to long-term recovery, homeowners and civic leaders must properly assess damage to trees and provide needed care. The Arbor Day Foundation Storm Recovery Kit contains both written materials and videos, and the Foundation will also send broadcast-quality DVDs upon request. The five ready-made segments can be aired "as is" and are an ideal fit for local news or public access television.

Bastrop, Texas, resident Donna Fiebrich was named the grand prize winner for the Arbor Day Foundation's fall Volunteer Center contest and chose Friends of the Lost Pines State Park to receive a $250 donation. Earlier this year, the Foundation, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas A&M Forest Service launched the Lost Pines Forest Recovery Campaign, a multi-year initiative to raise money to plant more than 4 million trees on public and private land in the loblolly ecosystem.

Oncor, a Texas-based electricity provider, is working with its suppliers to offer 12,000 free trees to customers through Energy-Saving Trees, an Arbor Day Foundation program that conserves energy and reduces household electricity bills through strategic tree planting.
