Often, the focus of celebrating Arbor Day falls on events organized by communities across the country and around the world. Tree-themed activities, ceremonial tree plantings, giveaways, even parades. But Arbor Day is a holiday that can be recognized in many different ways. Whether by yourself or with your family, consider some of these options for celebrating.
Spend Time Outdoors
Whether you’re hiking through your favorite National Forest or playing with the family at a community park, simply spending time surrounded by trees is a great way to spend the holiday dedicated to them. And if you’ve ever wanted to try shinrin-yoku, now may be a great time. This Japanese practice — translated as “forest bathing” — involves taking in the forest with all your senses and connecting with it.
Plant a Tree or Care for Existing Trees
Tree planting is the core of what Arbor Day is all about, and planting a tree in your yard would be carrying on a legacy that is nearly 150 years old. If you don’t have room for a new tree, however, consider maintenance for existing trees. Renewing or replacing mulch is a great place to start.
Complete a Nature Scavenger Hunt
Make up your own or download one of the many found online. It’s a great way to get and explore the natural world. Your community may even be holding a scavenger hunt to celebrate Arbor Day!
Identify the Trees Around You
One great way to celebrate trees is to learn more about them. You can use our online What Tree Is That? tree identification guide to help you discover what trees are growing around you. Then take some time to learn more about each kind of tree.
Clean Up a Park or Other Community Green Space
Arbor Day is a great time to volunteer. Watch for opportunities in your community to spruce up a city park or pick up litter around street trees.
Create Art
Translate your celebration of trees into poetry, drawings, sidewalk chalk, music, or any other type of art that interests you.
Most importantly, though, be sure to take a moment to appreciate all the wonderful things trees do for us every day.
Share Your #ArborDay
Grab a photo of your Arbor Day celebration and share it on social media! If you use the hashtag #arborday and tag the Arbor Day Foundation, we’ll plant a tree in your honor — up to 100,000 trees total.
