Hydroussa Navigation Ltd. Partners with the Arbor Day Foundation to Support Forest Protection Carbon Project in Southern Kenya
LINCOLN, Nebraska (December 13, 2022) – After measuring emissions from a voyage of the M/V Myra, one of their bulk carrier ships, Hydroussa Navigation Ltd. partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to identify a verified carbon project that could help offset the equivalent amount of CO2, a greenhouse gas.
The selected project — Kasigau Corridor REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) in southern Kenya — supports a vital wildlife area consisting of over 494,000 acres of dryland forest located between Kenya’s Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks. This land is home to more than 370 species of wildlife, from vulnerable big cats like cheetahs and lions to endangered species such as the African elephant, African wild dog, and Grévy’s zebra.
To protect the region’s ecosystem, this project works with local communities, the Kenya Wildlife Service, and other NGOs to replace unsustainable sources of income — subsistence farming, poaching, and illegal tree harvesting — with long-term enterprises that are beneficial for both the community and environment. This includes jobs that support local education, creation of eco-friendly products, and protection of both forest and wildlife. In addition to monitoring the forest of both natural and human-caused disasters, this project has also planted approximately 100,000 tree seedlings to help restore the land and further sequester additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
“This work will bring a variety of positive benefits to the Rukinga ecosystem,” said Dan Lambe, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Projects like Kasigau Corridor REDD+ help meaningfully support local people and move us towards a greener, more sustainable future. Hydroussa Navigation Ltd.’s support is greatly appreciated as we pursue our mission to inspire people to plant nurture and celebrate trees.”
For the past 50 years, the Arbor Day Foundation has worked to plant nearly 500 million trees in forests and communities around the world. Through a global network of partnerships, the Foundation facilitates projects that empower organizations of all sizes to reach their sustainability goals via measurable, impactful work through trees and forests. The Foundation recently announced an initiative to plant 500 million trees over the next 5 years in the forests and communities that need them most.
“As we continue our journey of reducing our global footprint, projects like this are extremely important in helping us make this transition towards a better, greener future,” said Fotis N. Dalmyras, Non-Executive Director of Hydroussa Navigation Ltd. “With integrity being one of our core values, we strive to conduct business in an ethical and honest manner and always aim to do the right thing. Our partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation helps us live up to that core belief.”
